Hoho Hehe Haha Valley (2020)
Artist: Kay Chan
Artwork material: Metal, EPDM and composite acrylic solid surface
Location: Choi Yee Bridge Garden
Inspired by the surrounding environment of Choi Yee Bridge Garden and the common vision shared by the Tuen Mun
community, artist Kay Chan designed a charming series of little emoticons. She also integrated three natural elements – river, tree and mountain – into the garden, encouraging the public to explore the three sets of art installations with their imagination, adding to the "fun element" of the space. "River" draws its inspiration from the Tuen Mun River; the varying heights of the seating allow the public to enjoy views of the river and observe migratory birds from different angles. "Tree" draws its inspiration from the egretry at Tuen Mun and allows people to feel like they are in a home protected by the Tree. "Mountain" draws its inspiration from the landscape of Castle Peak; the artist hopes that the miniature hills will encourage community interaction and bring attention to environmental protection issues.
Design Intension of Hoho Hehe Haha Valley:
Tuen Mun has a unique historical background, which involves rich elements of stories about the natural scenery. The artwork, Hoho Hehe Haha Valley, in Choi Yee Bridge Garden’s Viva! River, merges the elements of extraordinary stories in Tuen Mun to the design of public furniture.
The design of Choi Yee Bridge Garden has been divided into three parts, which represents three essential elements of Tuen Mun – river, tree and mountain. In use of the three elements, a series of little emoticons have been created, pouring vitality and charm to the garden.
River: It draws its inspiration from the Tuen Mun River, as the evidence of changes in Tuen Mun. It also allows the public to enjoy views of the river and observe migratory birds from different angles, and raises concerns on the ecology of the riverside.
Tree: Public furniture stands aside the trees in different forms. As a home located in the park, it guards the ones who rest, read, talk and have picnics beneath the trees, and enjoy the nature and peace in lives brought by the trees.
Mountain: Transforming the landscape of Castle Peak into miniature hills, everyone can step on the hills and play around. After sunset, the tiny eyes of the art installations will be lightened up, like a group of attentive little emoticons, providing guidance of the route towards home with warm light.
In spite of the design of the garden’s hardware, we specially provide software,
the park illustration book. We believe that a park can not only perform its fundamental function of leisure, but also a place for education. It allows children to learn social skills and develop their potential while playing. Characteristics such as bravery, creativity, etc. can be cultivated gradually. Utilizing the illustration book with the park, offered an additional level of learning for easier projection to the stories. It combined the history of Tuen Mun, ecology and creative emoticons to raise community concerns on conservation. As such, people can have a more wholesome view on the meaning of the parks’ existence in the community.
