A Double Listen Arena (2022)
Toolbox Percussion is delighted to present a sound-based exhibition “A Double Listen Arena”. The exhibition and its nominative performances will open to the public on 12 August 2022 at ArtisTree, Taikoo Place, running through to 22 August 2022. “A Double Listen Arena”, serving as a community hub, features many of the past and new creative attempts of Toolbox Percussion. The exhibition is supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Swire Properties, and Tom Lee Music. Directed by Louis Siu, Artistic Director of Toolbox Percussion, the exhibition transforms musical and creative experiences into interactive percussive sound and installation, multi-channel soundscape composition, and a variety of programs to reimagine contemporary music and creativity.
The Interactive Exhibition is Toolbox Percussion’s undertaking into the practices of community arts, highlighted by Set Designer Kay Chan’s new playful installations where different play sculptures resemble public play space, allowing the audience to participate to compose a new listening experience. Pairing with a Newly commissioned Soundscape by composer Fung Lam, experimenting with a fresh way to recreate a surrounding aural experience. The soundscape will have elements interconnecting with the site’s installations to allow audience to take part of the creative process.

Think of the last time when you were inside a playground. Besides focusing on the game, did you hear how the basketball rubbed on the wooden floor? Did you notice the crispy sound of ping pong hitting on the table?
A few months ago, I had the chance to look into the origin of playgrounds because of work needs. It has been said that the concept of playgrounds existed 200 years ago, along with the invention of the Outdoor Gymnasium in 19th century Germany. The playground was first designed as a space to train up the public's physique as a practical tool, so when children's playground emerged, body training and sense experiencing interconnected as nowadays’ play experience.
When Louis approached me to design for A Double Listen Arena, I immediately recalled our past potential collaboration, about how we could have recreated a space for bigger kids and adults to explore the gymnasium with a child’s perspective, opening all senses with sheer curiosity. This time, I would like to truly bring this playground back to its origin, presenting a playspace where sense and play are equivalently important. At A Double Listen Arena, while Toolbox Percussion brings a new music experience to enlarge your imagination at one level, the playground setting will bring back the long-forgotten sensory combination to stimulate creativity at another level. A Double Listen Arena would be a space for all people to recall the pure joy as a child and experience the multisensory complexity of the moment.
